Unreal Progress

A few weeks back I began to rebuild the game in Unreal Engine. I've been making a lot of progress on it lately, so I'm here to share the status once again.

Here's what is already working with the new prototype:

  1. Click to move navigation
  2. Terrains and water
  3. Lighting
  4. A temporary character model, with animations
  5. On screen HUD, though it's very incomplete
  6. Background music

There are no abilities or attacks yet, no enemies to attack, and thus also there is no loot to drop from those non-existent enemies. Invisible fences keep the player from navigating out of bounds.

I had always planned on going for a more photo realistic look for the final game, so moving to Unreal has been very helpful in that regard. Now I won't have to render models and combine hundreds of rendered still frames into 2D animations to achieve it. Working in 2D had been very easy to experiment with the game play loop, though.

Everything is being done in Blueprint, thus far. I'm currently using a character design and animations from Mixamo, but those will not be in the final game. I have a lot of work left to do on the HUD, but I have managed to clean it up considerably in the last few days.

If I can keep the file size below 1GB, I'll be uploading it here when it's ready for some early testing. Currently it's already pushing 800MB compressed, and it's sitting at over 2GB uncompressed.
